Ms Rudenko awed the world with her chess prowess - Lyudmila Rudenko

A Google Doodle has been created to honour what would have been the 114th birthday of this chess playing great.
Ms Rudenko awed the world with her chess prowess, and first emerged as a world class player in the 1928 Moscow Women’s Championship, where she placed fifth.

She would later go on to become the second Women’s World Chess Champion in 1950 — and she held that title until 1953.
Lyudmila Rudenko, who is remembered as one of the most influential chess players to ever pick up a rook, was first introduced to chess by her father when she was aged 10.

But the game of strategy did not become her primary focus immediately.

Initially, she was fascinated with swimming, and was good enough in that endeavour to win a local competition in the women’s 400-meter breast stroke in Odessa. After that victorious swim, she moved on to Moscow where she refined her chess skills.

While her ascendance to the highest rank in women’s chess in 1950 is perhaps her best known achievement, Ms Rudenko won many, many more of those awards — and said during her lifetime that an instance of bravery and selflessness was her greatest memory and triumphs, not one of chess.
That moment was the organisation of children during the siege of Leningrad during the Second World War. That siege resulted in the deaths of more than one million civilians, and lasted nearly 900 days.

Rudenko died in 1986, and Google says its doodle in her honour “reimagines a focused Rudenko’s determination during the world championship game”.

She was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2015.

Lee Lin Chin Departs SBS After 30 Years - SBS news

SBS news presenter Lee Lin Chin has announced her resignation after almost 40 years with the broadcaster.

Speaking to Ten Daily's Sandra Sully, Chin said there were several "small to medium-sized reasons" for her resignation, but would not elaborate.

"There's not one big reason, there's many small to medium-sized reasons, which for the time being I wish to keep to myself but may talk about one day," she said

"One reason I shall reveal however is that working two days a week didn't give me enough time to devote to the pub and re-reading the complete works of Shakespeare. So now that I work zero days that issue has been addressed."

The prominent and stylish newsreader will deliver her last bulletin for SBS World News on Sunday.

Chin was born to Chinese parents in Jakarta, Indonesia, and grew up in Singapore before migrating to Australia.

SBS released a statement calling her "one of Australia's most recognisable and respected newsreaders".

"Having spent the bulk of my professional life at SBS, this isn't by any means an easy decision. I shall be leaving a happy and satisfying role as a newsreader. My friends and colleagues for whom I have fervent respect will be deeply missed," Chin said.

Chin started working for SBS as a translator for Chinese-language films in 1980, and later joined SBS World News delivering weekend bulletins.

More recently, Chin was involved in comedy sketches with SBS VICELAND's The Feed.

SBS managing director Michael Ebeid said Chin was "truly one of a kind", adding that the broadcaster would "miss her colourful personality gracing our screens on the weekend".

"Lee Lin embodies everything that SBS stands for and will always be art of the SBS family. We respect her decision to embrace new projects and wish her all the very best for the future," he said.

She was nominated for the Gold Logie in 2016.

DISCOVERY: A Huge Liquid Water Lake Beneath The Southern Pole of Mars

A huge lake of liquid salty water has been found buried deep in Mars, raising the possibility of finding life on the red planet.

The discovery, based on observations by a European spacecraft, generated excitement from experts.

Water is essential to life as we know it, and scientists have long sought to prove that the liquid is present on Mars.

"If these researchers are right, this is the first time we've found evidence of a large water body on Mars," said Cassie Stuurman, a geophysicist at the University of Texas who found signs of an enormous Martian ice deposit in 2016.

Scott Hubbard, a professor of astronautics at Stanford University who served as NASA's first Mars program director in 2000, called it "tremendously exciting."

The study, published overnight in the journal Science, does not determine how deep the reservoir actually is.

This means that scientists can't specify whether it's an underground pool, an aquifer-like body, or just a layer of sludge.

To find the water, Italian researchers analysed radar signals collected over three years by the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft.
Their results suggest that a 20km-wide reservoir lies below ice about 1.5km thick in an area close to the planet's south pole.

They spent at least two years examining the data to make sure they'd detected water, not ice or another substance.

"I really have no other explanation," said astrophysicist Roberto Orosei of Italy's National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna and lead author of the study.

Mars is very cold, but the water might have been kept from freezing by dissolved salts. It's the same as when you put salt on a road, said Kirsten Siebach, a planetary geologist at Rice University who wasn't part of the study.

"This water would be extremely cold, right at the point where it's about to freeze. And it would be salty. Those are not ideal conditions for life to form," Siebach said.
Still, she said, there are microbes on Earth that have been able to adapt to environments like that.

Orosei said, "It's tempting to think that this is the first candidate place where life could persist" on Mars.

He suspects Mars may contain other hidden bodies of water, waiting to be discovered.

Our planetary neighbor has a popular target for exploration, with rovers on its surface and other probes examining the planet from orbit.

In May, NASA launched another spacecraft, the InSight Mars lander, that will dig under the surface after it reaches a flat plain just north of the Martian equator in November.

Red Planet And 'Blood Moon' Pair Up To Dazzle Night Sky - Blood Moon 2018 Australia

Amateur astronomers in the southern hemisphere will be best-placed to enjoy the spectacle, especially those in southern Africa, Australia, India and Madagascar, though it will also be partly visible in Europe and South America.

- Celestial bodies align -

A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth takes position in a straight line between the moon and sun, blotting out the direct sunlight that normally makes our satellite glow whitish-yellow.

The moon travels to a similar position every month, but the tilt of its orbit means it normally passes above or below the Earth's shadow -- so most months we have a full moon without an eclipse.

When the three celestial bodies are perfectly lined up, however, the Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light from the sun while refracting or bending red light onto the moon, usually giving it a rosy blush.

This is what gives the phenomenon the name "blood moon", though Mark Bailey of the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland said the colour can vary greatly.

It depends partly on "how cloudy or transparent those parts of the Earth's atmosphere are which enable sunlight to reach the moon", he told AFP.

"During a very dark eclipse the moon may be almost invisible.

The long duration of this eclipse is partly due to the fact that the moon will make a near-central passage through Earth's umbra -- the darkest, most central part of the shadow.

- 'Eerie and beautiful' -

Our constant companion will also be at the farthest point on its orbit from Earth, making its movement across the sky slower from our perspective, thus spending longer in the dark.

NASA, meanwhile, has called out social media hoaxers claiming that Mars will appear as big as the moon during the eclipse.

"If that were true, we'd be in big trouble given the gravitational pulls on Earth, Mars, and our moon!" the NASA website states.

Mars will more likely appear as a very bright star, and viewers will need no protective eye gear.

"All you have to do is dress warmly and go outside!" the Royal Astronomical Society advises.

"If you want a close-up view of the moon as it turns red, a pair of binoculars is helpful."

"In the middle of a lunar eclipse it can look as if a red planet has taken up residence near the Earth -- they are both eerie and beautiful and I'll certainly be looking out for it!"

Blood Moon 2018: 5 Reasons Why This Week's Lunar Eclipse Is Going To Be ...

The Blood Moon 2018 Will Last For An Hour And Forty - Five Minutes

The world is set to witness the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. The phenomenon will take place on the night of July 27 and early hours of July 28. The Blood Moon 2018 will last for an hour and forty-five minutes and is expected to be visible in India, parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

As per the reports, the moon will be in perfect alignment with the sun and Earth. The moon will be in the middle of the Earth and the sun.

People across the globe will also get a chance to witness a deep red Blood Moon, which occurs when the moon is perfectly eclipsed and appears red in colour due to the sunlight.

Mars will be closest to the Earth as in the last 15 years, during the July 27 blood moon.

"The Moon is not always in perfect alignment with the Sun and the Earth, so that is why we do not get a lunar eclipse every lunar cycle. You will see the sunrise and sunset of the Earth lighting up the surface of the Moon -- over 350,000 km away. If you were on the Moon, you would see a total solar eclipse as the Earth would be blocking the Sun," CNN quoted Brad Tucker, an astronomer with the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, as saying.

The eclipse will be visible across the globe, except for North America.

It can best be viewed from Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Asia.

ANDROID USERS MORE LIKELY TO BE UNLUCKY IN LOVE, SURVEY FINDS

In today’s tech-obsessed society, your choice of smartphone may also have a significant impact on your love life, or lack thereof.

A new survey has found that 70 per cent of singles would prefer to date someone who owns an iPhone instead of an Android user, with nearly two in five stating that they believe the phone an individual uses can affect first impressions when on a date.

The survey of 1,502 singletons in the US was carried out by Decluttr, a company that helps customers sell unwanted tech items.

In addition to the conclusion that iPhone users were deemed as being more romantically appealing than Android users, the study also unveiled some other interesting tidbits regarding dating in the digital age.

According to the findings, only 65 per cent of iPhone users would be open to going on a first date with someone who owns an Android smartphone.

On the other hand, a mere 53 per cent of Android users would say the same about people who swear by their beloved iPhones.

A recent study has discovered that women tend to be pickier than men on dating sites, with men becoming more choosy with age.

The team of researchers from Queensland University in Australia assessed the behaviour of more than 41,000 dating site users aged from 18 to 80 years old.

The women aged between 18 and 30 were noted as being particularly specific when seeking out a partner, while the men who were over the age of 40 were fussier than the female participants.

There’s A Quadrillion Tons of Diamonds Lying Beneath Your Feet - Latest discovery

An international team of scientists have discovered a large treasure of diamonds, hidden inside the depths of planet Earth. Initial reports suggest that there may be over a quadrillion tonnes of the stone buried below the Earth’s surface.
The scientists became aware of this enormous diamond in the centre of the Earth due to a natural phenomenon such as tsunamis and earthquakes.

This discovery may not be useful for prospectors as the stash of diamonds is buried too deep within the Earth’s craton. A depth of this kind is too hard to penetrate and has never been attempted yet.

Dr Faul says, "The sound velocity in diamond is more than twice as fast as in the dominant mineral in upper mantle rocks, olivine.”

Although this evidence surrounding the discovery of diamonds is circumstantial, Dr Faul believes that the existence of diamonds is the only logical explanation for the soundwaves reaction.

According to Dr Faul and his team, the diamonds sum up to a total of 2 percent in the Earth’s mantle.

'Father of Big Bang theory': Google Doodle honours Georges Lemaître’s 124th birthday

'Father of Big Bang theory': Google Doodle honours Georges Lemaître’s 124th birthday.
His theory was presented in one of his academic papers in 1931, and it is now widely known as the “Big Bang” theory.

The astronomer and professor was born on July 17, 1894, in Charleroi, Belgium, and began studying civil engineering at the Catholic University of Leuven at the age of 17.
He completed his doctorate in 1920 and was ordained as a priest in 1923.

He became a post-graduate student in astronomy at the University of Cambridge in 1923, before spending the following year at Harvard College Observatory in the US.
Mr Lemaître returned to Belgium in 1925 and became a part-time lecturer at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he started to work on his groundbreaking research.

He published his cutting-edge theory that the universe was expanding in his famed report in 1927, but it did not specifically link to the notion of the Big Bang theory.
After outlining his theory of the universe's creation to the scientists, Mr Einstein is reported to have said: “This is the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I have ever listened.”
Mr Lemaître received a number of accolades during his life, including the Prix Jules Janssen in 1936, the highest award from the French Astronomical Aociety.

He was also elected a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium in 1941, and was awarded the Eddington Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society in 1953.

Massive Iceberg Looms Over A Village In Greenland

The photographs are stunning: a giant mountain of ice towers over a tiny village, with colorful homes reminiscent of little doll houses against the stark, blue-gray landscape.

But for the people living in those houses – that beauty could be life-threatening.

"It's kind of like, if you lived in the suburbs, and you woke up one morning and looked out, and there was a skyscraper next to your house," says David Holland, an oceanographer at New York University who does research in Greenland during the summer months. "I'd be the first to get out of there."

He says that's why authorities have taken action to evacuate those living closest to the water from the village of Innaarsuit, where the iceberg has parked itself just off the coast. According to the BBC, the village has just 169 residents.

"In these shallow bays, these icebergs may drift in and become stuck, grounded on the sea floor," Holland says. "So that's what happened to one of these bergs."

Holland says it can be quite alarming for residents.

"These are small villages with little houses located right at the shoreline, and all of a sudden icebergs show up, and they look like New York skyscrapers, they're just towering," he says. "They're very unstable, and they can break up."

Last year in northwestern Greenland, four people died when a landslide resulted in a tsunami that swamped a number of homes. That disaster is fresh in peoples' minds, says glaciologist Anna Hogg at the University of Leeds, who also does research in Greenland.

"There's a risk that a large chunk of ice could break off this very large iceberg, fall into the ocean, and cause a mini-tidal wave that will wash up and hit the village," Dr. Hogg says.

"We know that icebergs are quite fragile things, they've got lots of fractures through them," she adds.

One surprising thing about many of the seaside communities in Greenland, Hogg says, is that despite the marine-based economy, most people can't swim. Hogg has spent a lot of time doing research near the village that's currently under threat from the iceberg, and says this adds to the risk of a potential tidal wave or flooding.

"There's only one swimming pool in Greenland. It's in Nuuk, which is much further down the coast than this village that we're talking about," Hogg says. "If you think about it, why would they be able to swim? The ocean water is just so cold; you can't even put your toe in without it being unbearably freezing."

Local authorities and media are keeping close watch on the iceberg: the newspaper Sermitsiaq reported today that it moved 500-600 meters during the night.

Though the process of glaciers losing ice is natural, and happens every summer, the waters around Greenland have warmed in recent decades, which means that it's happening at a faster rate.

With $900m fortune, Kylie Jenner set to become youngest self made billionaire

Reality TV star Kylie Jenner is on track to become the youngest self-made billionaire in history thanks to the booming cosmetics company she launched two years ago, Forbes magazine reported on Wednesday.

Jenner, 20, half-sister of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, debuted Kylie Cosmetics in 2016 with $29 lip kits containing matching lipstick and lip liner, and has since sold more than $US630 million ($855 million) worth of makeup.

Forbes said it valued her company at nearly $800 million and that Jenner owns 100 per cent of it.

Adding millions from TV programs, endorsements and after-tax dividends from her company, Forbes said Jenner was "conservatively" worth $900 million.

Another year of growth would make her the youngest-self made billionaire ever, male or female, the magazine said, surpassing Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg - who became a billionaire at age 23.

According to Forbes, the company has only five full-time employees, with Jenner’s mother, Kris Jenner, handling finances and public relations in exchange for a 10 per cent management fee.

Kylie Jenner first grabbed the spotlight as part of the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" reality TV show with her mother and siblings. Forbes estimated that Kim Kardashian, who has her own cosmetics, clothing and mobile games lines, is worth $350 million.

2019 Suzuki Jimny Officially Revealed For European Market

The new Jimny has a strong square body to express its off-road ability as well as contribute to the driver’s situational awareness. The more upright A-pillars and flat clamshell bonnet enhance visibility from the windshield. The front grille is simple and black, highlighting the round signature headlamps, with 15-inch dark-metallic alloy wheels.
The Jimny features a part-time 4WD system with low range transfer gear, which can be easily switched from 2H (2WD-high gear), 4H (4WD-high gear) and 4L (4WD-low gear) modes by a shift lever directly connected to the transfer gear. Compared to the 4H mode, the 4L mode can transfer more torque to the tyres while in lower gears, for better traction on steep slopes and rough terrain.
The former 1.3-litre engine is replaced by a 1.5-litre engine in the all-new Jimny.
The Suzuki Jimny will be available with a range of engine options. the 1.2-litre four cylinder K-Series petrol and the 1-litre turbocharged three-cylinder with direct injection.
The Jimny is being offered in three trim levels in Japan - XG, XL, and XC. Prices start at the equivalent of Rs 9.06 lakh for the Jimny and Rs 10.94 lakh for the Sierra.
Despite the increased displacement, it has smaller overall dimensions than the engine it replaces, with 15% reduced weight, contributing to enhanced fuel efficiency. There’s a 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic transmission on offer.

Suzuki Safety Support is Suzuki’s preventative safety technology that helps the driver avoid accidents. With Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS), if the system determines that there is a risk of collision with a forward vehicle or pedestrian, it issues an audio and visual warning, increases braking force, or applies strong automatic brakes depending on the situation, in an effort to avoid the collision or reduce damage.

A New Study Shows Eating Nuts Significantly Improves Fertility In Men

A new study shows eating nuts significantly improves fertility in men.

According to the study, it also improved their swimmers’ movement, shape and energy levels, all factors which increase the odds of becoming a father.

Nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which are known to benefit sperm.

The findings come from tests by Spanish researchers on 119 healthy young men.

They ate a Western diet but half were given a 60g mix of almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts. After 14 weeks, the nut group had a 16 per cent higher sperm count.

Its swimming ability was six per cent better and vitality also improved by four per cent.

Speaking about it, Dr Albert Salas-Huetos, of the University Rovira Virgili, told a fertility conference in Barcelona, “The findings support a beneficial role for nut consumption in sperm quality.”

The study adds to evidence that eating healthily with lots of fruit and veg can improve fertility.

The Mount Agung volcano on Bali has erupted again, ejecting a 2,000-metre column of thick ash, and hurling lava down its slopes

The Mount Agung volcano on Bali has erupted again, ejecting a 2,000-metre column of thick ash, and hurling lava down its slopes.

The Indonesian geological agency's Agung-monitoring post said explosions from the mountain began just after 9:00pm on Monday and lasted more than seven minutes.

"Flares of incandescent lava" reached two kilometres from the crater, it said, setting fire to forests at high elevation on the mountain.

The volcano was periodically erupting ash, which was drifting west. The island's airport, to the south, was still operating normally.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the explosions on Monday night were "thunderous" and hurled white hot rocks from the crater.

It was the volcano's first explosive eruption since a dramatic increase in activity last year that temporarily forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
The alert status for Agung was not from its second-highest level, and the exclusion zone around the crater remained at 4km.

Bali's international airport closed for half a day on Friday because of volcanic ash from Agung, disrupting travel for tens of thousands.

LeBron James To Join The Los Angeles Lakers On A Four-Year, $154m Deal

LeBron James to join the Los Angeles Lakers on a four-year, $154m deal.

James's agency made the announcement on Sunday in a release, saying he had agreed to a four-year, $US154 million ($208 million) contract.

The game's best all-around player and biggest star will now lead a young Lakers team that had been overmatched in recent years while rebuilding.

Los Angeles also provides James with a larger platform for his business interests and social activism.

This is the third time in eight years James has changed teams. He returned to the Cavs in 2014 after four seasons in Miami.

James took to Instagram soon after the announcement to thank the Cleveland fans for the past four seasons with the Cavaliers.

The 33-year-old had previously said he wanted to finish his career in Ohio, and although he's leaving home again, Cleveland fans are more forgiving after he ended the city's 52-year sports championship drought in 2016.

Social media went into meltdown on the news, after months of speculation about where the year's most prized free agent would land next season.

LA was one of several teams that were reportedly vying for James's services next season, with Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets also touted as possible teams to pick up the player that many basketball fans and commentators believe is the greatest of all time.

As soon as the announcement was made fans noted that his new coach, Luke Walton, was in the same rookie class as James.

The Lakers' big offseason might not be finished. Another star forward, Kawhi Leonard, reportedly wants to go to Los Angeles via a trade from the San Antonio Spurs.

By adding James, the Lakers immediately figure to reverse course from a recent downturn. Los Angeles has missed the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, which is the longest streak in franchise history. The Lakers have 16 championships, including back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 with Phil Jackson as coach.

Current coach Walton led the team to a 35-47 record last season after it went 26-56 in his first season at the helm in 2016-17.
